US Proposal for student involvement in data analysis at the turn-on of LHC.

3 March 1998 (from: Michael Barnett)

Dramatic focus on LHC turn-on with Web-centered activities.

The U.S. contingent will be submitting a pre-proposal on 1 April to the US National Science Foundation and Department of Energy.

The leadership of ATLAS and of CERN have expressed interest and support, and have suggested that European countries are likely to collaborate on this project.

Propose to provide limited, filtered but new, real data to schools.

  • Develop student activities with data.
  • Train teachers in advance.
  • Practice with Tevatron Collider data.
  • Build on experience of Hands on CERN project.

Will reach schools via 60 US universities who will recruit schools near them. Perhaps 200 US high schools will be involved. A special effort will be made to involve historically black colleges and universities, and through them, high schools with large African-American populations.

Chart: explains structure of organization.

Would like cameras in experimental area, experiment control room, in LHC control room, and perhaps in cafeteria and elsewhere. Remote controlled by students.

Small number of students and teachers come to CERN to interview scientists and to report to schools. Further attention at schools when these students return home.

Focus will be on education but proposal has clear public relations benefits.

Science museum component possible.

Four full-time staff members will help design program and aid universities to carry out their responsibilities.

Expect >$3 million funding for first five years. Funding agencies believe that it is essential to "integrate research and education". Although this program could start later, they believe it is important to begin now and develop a meaningful program.

Proposal is a collaboration with CMS with support from Fermilab.

Will collaborate with all interested organizations.
